Cooking with Apples

Recommended Varieties

Quantities

Jellies & Jams

Select a highly-flavored apple for jams and jellies. We suggest:

Johnathan, Akane, and mix of Haralson

Cooked jam
Strawberry 3 qt. Makes 11 cups of jam
Raspberry 3 qt. Makes 10 cups of jam

Freezer jam:
Strawberry 2 qt. Makes 7 cups
Raspberry 2 qt. Makes 7 cups

Pies & Applesauce

Apples that retain their flavor work best for baking. We recommend: Idared, Jonathan, Melrose and Jonagold

For added flavor mix in the following varieties:
Haralson, Winesap, Golden Delicious.
Although these apples are chunkier when cooked, they add wonderful flavor to baked goods

Apple Pie: 3 lbs of apples, (approximately 6-12 apples, depending on size)

Strawberry Pie: 2 lbs of strawberries

Salads

Choose good eating apples that retain their color for visual appeal, such as:

Honey Crisp, Red Delicious and Golden Delicious

Tips:

Dip fresh-cut apples and other fruit in lemon juice to preserve the color of the fruit, for best results. In addition, to adding visual appeal, the lemon juice brings out the flavor of the fruit.
